***update: As of Wednesday I was measuring 1-cm dilated. This morning I passed my mucus plug and of course called our doctor whom I'm still waiting on to call us back. If you look at any of the baby books or google it will tell you "labor can start hours, days or weeks from now". Very helpful. So we keep doing what we were doing before, we wait :)***
A baby is a blessing and at the end of the day anything happy healthy and strong is exactly what you want the end result to be. However on the other hand very early on both the husband and I knew we were more "girl" type of people. When we talked about our "if you could create the perfect situation it would be" ideal it was always to have a girl first then a boy, or have a girl period. Well since the world does not work like that we just crossed our fingers extra tight on one hand for super healthy and happy and on the other hand pretty please-maybe could it be-oh please- a girl :)
Boys get duped period.
Girls have a much better clothes selection. Why do all the boys pants have to be cargo pants or cargo shorts? What 4 month old baby needs cargo pants or shorts and what parent wants 50 of them?
Boys are rough in every sense of the word. Not all, it's true there is a rare one in there sometimes who is sweet and quite and gentle. Mostly though boys are taught to be strong and "crush the enemy, arggghh. Defeat! FIRE! Defeat!" I was certainly a tom boy growing up since I had 3 boy cousins around me on a daily basis and I grew up with a pet cow and horses but as much as I was in the mud I was also in the mud with my barbie, silently clutching to her (I'm sure) headless body while just waiting for the impending doom of the boys attack.
Girls get an easy bake oven to play with indoors. Boys can play with it too and it's perfectly normal, but let's be honest...who got it for Christmas? Husband remembers playing with his sisters but again, Grandma and Grandpa did not run out and buy him his own little oven and apron. He got trucks and plastic army men and dug dirt holes in the back yard and most likely tried on many occasions to blow up the easy bake oven.
Lastly and most importantly boys have complicated parts (if you know what I mean). I'm not a prude but I'm also not that kind of girl to talk about....ya know, that stuff. Not in that high school giggle giggle eww way, heavens no. If I need to, ok let's talk in a formal respectful way about it all. I was not raised in a family where you openly expressed yourself in that way or talked about it much. You always could and were supported if you needed anything but it just never happened. Why do I bring this up? Well it's really the whole reason for this post you see, the day we found out Beckett was a boy.
_____________________________________________________________
We went in for our head to toe ultrasound and we were so excited to see him for the first time. Really see him that is. Husband and I went back and forth for weeks before hand using all the funny wives tales to determine what "it" was. 3 days in a row I wanted burgers and steak and all the red meat and potatoes I could get my hands on. Then for a week straight I wanted salads, candy and fruit juice. By the time it was ultrasound time it was a tie for girl food days and boy food days. When we arrived for the appointment we were greeted by a nice tech who was also super chatty. Great start.
She is doing her thing 20 min in and she asks the long awaited question every parent longs to hear "So do you want to know?" and of course we replied, yes. You might as well have put us in the Cash Cab tv game show and made the lights on the ceiling come on and streamers blow out the sides of the bed because this woman put on a show with our poor still gender unknown child's "parts". She not only zoomed in and started drawing circles over it over and over but she turned on this high pitched voice and repeatedly said "there is the pee pee, there it is, there is his pee pee. Oh my look at that pee pee. Oh yes he is a boy and he is letting us know, he is a proud boy!"
I only wish at this moment I WAS on a game show because I'm pretty sure the look on my face would have been one that was made for tv only. I was horrified and felt violated. For my child, for us and for this poor lady that clearly gets way to excited about little boy parts.
So ok, it was a boy. Way to lay it on me but at least that part was over with. 10 more min of the ultrasound to go and we can get out of here and I can call a therapist. She zoomed around his kidneys and liver and all the other tiny organs that needed examining and measuring and wouldn't you know it she just could not help herself. Boop- right back there. The voice came back, the circles started and then she said "Well he really is a big boy oh and look typical, already playing with himself!". Really. REALLY!
So you see, boys have complicated parts that people like to get crazy about apparently and I was tortured and traumatized the day I found out our baby was a he. We have had a few months now to change gears and figure out what exactly to do with a boy. Naturally husband is super excited about all the fun toys but it's been hard getting him to understand that legos are not made for 3 month olds.
Sigh. Boys.
